A PAUSE FOR THOUGHT AT CHRISTMAS
Christmas comes but once a year
And when it comes it brings good cheer.
But what of diet I hear you say
Can I forget it for just one day?
But then there’s the build-up, the parties, the fun
All part of Christmas, am I to have none?
Can I resist the mince pies and cream
Or that Christmas cake looking a dream.
Glasses of sherry, trifle and crisps
Punches, peanuts and sin laden dips.
Am I to despair, is everything lost
Is it 10 syns a day at any cost?
Do not panic, help is at hand
Just stay calm and understand.
Everyone’s human, we want to have fun
Its just once a year, when all’s said and done.
One mince pie (or two) passing our lips
Won’t put 10 inches back on our hips.
Just be careful, and don’t go mad
To forget you are slimming would be quite sad.
Think how hard you’ve worked to get slim
(Remember Santa and the size of him!)
So when your’e full up and ready to pop
Make Slimming World your very first stop
A brand new you for 2011
With you having simply loads of fun.
Your Slimming World group will always be here
So Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

GOOD TIMES WITH JLC!
What a terrific guy Justin Lee Collins is - he spent hours having his photograph with hundreds of excitable Slimming World consultants. He was an absolute treasure, really empathised with our cause, not to mention having an amazing singing voice!!! He was deeply moved during the annual awards ceremony and hopefully enjoyed presenting the award to our amazing Woman of the Year who lost 15 stones. Whoop whoop!

FABULOUS MISS SLINKIES!!
Huge congratulations to all our nominees who took part in the Miss Slinky Group finalists. The winners were the lovely Leah in the first session, and the gorgeous Hannah in the second session. Both had such fabulous weight-loss journeys to tell, as did all of our lovely finalists. There were some amazing awards given out, including no less than FIVE CLUB 10 awards. With a total weight loss of 100lbs - and just 12.5lbs gained, you really are doing a fabulous job - huge praise to all of you. With just 5 weigh-ins to go before Christmas, there is so much that can be done - I have a small but very exciting early Christmas gift for everyone at group next week to keep that motivation strong!!!!

They were all winners and I can't wait to share their stories in group.

Who will be Cambourne’s Miss Slinky 2010?
NOMINATIONS REQUIRED NOW!!!!!
Every Slimming World group has a Miss Slinky – so who will be Cambourne’s Miss Slinky 2010? There’s no minimum weight loss criteria at all -Slinkiness is a state of mind – it’s about how you feel!! We will be celebrating Miss Slinky in group on Wednesday 17th November so you now need to start thinking about who you would like to nominate to be in the final and let me know so that I can get in touch with nominees to get them on board for the final. There’s a fabulous £2,000 prize for the National Winner which is announced in January!!!!
I’ve got a fantastic fun night in group planned that evening with low-syn cocktail tasters. Why not glam it up for the night and really show off and accentuate your best bits? Wear something that makes you feel fabulous – with as much bling as you like – and that includes those gorgeous men amongst you!! It will be an ideal opportunity to find out how everyone is progressing in terms of your Christmas Wish pledges – don’t forget that everyone achieving their Christmas wish by 22nd December will qualify for the draw for a FREE 12 Week countdown which we’ll draw in group on 29th December.
So let me know as soon as possible who you want to nominate as your Sassy Miss Slinky – and also let me know if you fancy bringing syn-free or low-syn cocktails in that evening so we can raise a toast to Miss Slinky 2010!!!

WHAT’S YOUR REASON FOR JOINING SLIMMING WORLD?
You all have your own reasons for joining Slimming World and I wanted to share some stories I heard this weekend from other members around the country. Some of them are just so moving, they brought a lump to my throat......
“I want to feel fab at 40”
“To take my son to baby swimming lessons without feeling I’m the biggest in the pool!”
“I knew that I had a ball to go to that my father-in-law was hosting in October and I knew I wouldn't be able to get a size 28 ball gown!! Lost six stone and managed to get into a size 16 - no-one recognised me!! “
“A Christmas photo of a very big bottom!! “
“Being diagnosed with heart condition that could kill me (S.A.D) at the age of 34 ! the extra weight (only a couple of stone) put extra strain on it . And hating myself for letting myself go!”
“Holiday photos that made me look frumpy and also the pain the extra weight put through my back (I have a chronic back problem) “
“I’d never had to diet as I was always 7stone (and looked anorexic) and having put on nearly 4 stone i had no confidence and struggled to work and home stuff so my son suffered. 2 stone down later I look healthy and have little or sometimes no back pain and all because my sister in law directed me to SW & not WW as i could still have chocolate””
“Did not want to fit the fair, fat and forty profile! This was (a now outdated may I add) a medical profile of a typical gallstones presentation. The only thing I could do nothing about was my my age and I can now say that for me - life began at 40!! :) “
“Initially holiday photos and deciding to start trying for a baby - I figured just not worry about it and try to lose it after the baby, but my mum nagged me to act now because it might affect my chances of getting pregnant. I lost about 2 stone before grinding to a halt & eventually giving up & putting much of it back on after discovering we weren't going to get pregnant naturally (and nothing to do with my weight). I rejoined when we had a date for the IVF and had 6 months to get down to a healthy weight in time for the treatment.... Two attempts later & still no baby, but did eventually get down to my target weight (over 3stone lost)”
“Battling with Post natal depression. It was the one place each week that I was me and not a Mummy. As i shrunk my confidence grew and the antidepressants were a thing of the past. “
“My eldest is Autistic and I didn't want him being teased for having a 'fat mummy' on top of everything else. Also being told I am too young to have my hips replaced although I am in constant pain (born with difficulties) and would have to wait at least another 10years, carrying extra can't help the problem.”
“Getting married again and didn't want to roll down the aisle”
“I’d joined initially as I didn’t want to be overweight mam (mine was and I was picked on at times for it) lost weight felt fab then met new partner got married and had another baby , jack was six months old when someone asked when i was due so hotfooted it back to class!!!! “
“First time was to lose the baby weight after my son was born (plus the stone extra i was already carrying!) Got to target, stopped going thought I could maintain on my own! Put a stone back on within weeks, had another baby, so back to group when i struggled to do up a pair of size 16 jeans in a shop fitting room with all the full length mirror's around :( Been back at target for a year now, wooo hooo!! “
“At the age of 42 I had a stroke, what a wake up call that was! It happened only a few months after my brother had died suddenly and unexpectedly and I was warned unless I did something about it I would be joining him in the graveyard! Not wanting to leave my parents again bereft and my son an orphan, I joined SW. Two years later I was 7 stones lighter and became a consultant! Four years down the line I am now 7 stones 9lbs lighter and heading towards my final, final (I keep resetting) target of 8 stones off!! “
“Best friend told me I needed to loose weight" best thing she did - I lost 9 stone!!”
“I was so big I could hardly walk with the pain in my hip and knee. I have high cholesterol and take a high dose of thyroxin. I felt the only thing left was diabetes and death. Oh boy how it has changed my life. “
“I wanted my tummy inside my jeans”
“I joined when I saw a friend who I hadn't seen for ages she had lost 4 stone with SW. I realised how unhappy I was, never wanted to go out with friends as I couldn't find anything to wear really didn't like myself. Joined that week, lost 3 stone. “
“I joined because my sister had joined & was doing really well, I'd already realised that I was unhappy with myself, my body, my life..!, I had spent a hot summer not being able to play with my young children on the beach, run around after them etc. And I found myself looking at my husband wondering why he was still with me, he didn't fall in love with me the size I was, I'd gone from a size 16 to a 22 & I felt if I didn't do something then he'd leave me and my kids would be teased for having a fat mum! (My husband loved me no matter what but I got this thought in to my head and it wouldn't go!!) Anyway, I'll always be grateful to my 'not so big now' sister! By joining herself & showing me how easy the Extra Easy plan is I've not only lost 5 stone, am now a size 12/14 for the 1st time in my adult life We both reached our target in the same week too, her losing 3st 4lbs & me losing 5st! “
“I lost my husband 5 years ago (he was only 60), so I ate and ate and ate, of course all the wrong things, just comfort eating really, plus not eating properly, wouldn't cook for myself. I too have hip and knee problems, had 2 hip replacements, which the extra weight didn't help, but then I met my new partner. A very kind and caring man, who accepted me for who I was, but I too always had to go the "fat shops" to get clothes to fit me. We came on holiday to Turkey, and found I was never comfortable in shorts and thin strapped vests, so decided to do something about it. I did try WW in Feb 09, lasted a week, was starving, so tried SW and have never looked back. Lost approx 2 st in 18 weeks, became a Consultant last July, and love the job. “
“I joined because I had pressure breaks in my feet, hated being a size 30-32. I joined 4 times and the first 3 I thought I could do it on my own. As we all know the group really does get us to target. I lost my 7 stone on my 4th joining and have not looked back.“
“I had suffered from Chronic Fatigue ( M.E.) and fibromyalgia for 15 yrs alongside having had hereditry high blood pressure from being 21 yrs old, then in 2004 I developed Thrombophilia which is thick sticky blood. In March of that year my GP gave me the stark ultimatum, lose weight now or come the end of the year I would probably have suffered a stroke. At best a debilitating stroke at worst a fatal stroke. I didn't need to be told twice and by December I’d dropped from a size 24/26 to a neat size 16, a total of 5 stone! and by July 2006 I reached my target with a total loss of 6st 8lbs”

WOW!!! LOW-SYN M&S WRAPS!!!
I’ve just enjoyed a FABULOUS lunch courtesy of Mr Marks & Mr Spencer’s “Eat Well” range. 3 Ginger Beef wraps and 3 Asian salad wrap with a sweet soy dip (which calculates just ½ syn for the WHOLE pack of 6 on original or extra easy/1 syn on green) AND (yes, I ate both packs!) 5 Thai Spiced & 5 Coconut & Lemongrass Chicken Wraps with a sweet soy dip (which works out at just 2 ½ syns for the whole pack). Low-syn wraps, I hear you ask? Well the ‘wrap’ is actually made from from a vegetable called Mooli which is a type of Japanese radish. It has a mild flavour and crunchy texture so it’s just perfect to make these delicious wraps. I’m sure we could easily make them ourselves if we can get hold of a mooli or two – they make fabulous finger buffet food so we could have some at our party night on 4th October! Any volunteers?

FOOD OPTIMISING FOR LIFE!!!!
When you joined Slimming World we asked you to make some simple changes to the way you cook, shop and eat (any diet that promises weight loss without making any changes is lying to you!!!!). I was chatting to one of our top target chicks in Morrisons today, who has been away on holiday for the past two weeks. When I asked how she’d been doing, her reply was dead simple - she says that food optimising really is for life now so she doesn’t think twice about it!!!! She should know - she lost over 6 stones to reach target!!!! I told her that this really is the key to long-term successful weight loss - ie to make these changes become so ingrained that they become habits for life, just like brushing your teeth! Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned Slimming World member, learning those little Food Optimising swaps, healthy habits and clever conversions is the key to losing weight beautifully!
So - how do YOU Food Optimise? Could you boost your weight loss by making a few small – and easy changes – this week? How many Syns could you save? Check your healthy habits with some of my reminders below…
Mealtime swaps
· Save 6 Syns per tbsp by swapping oil for Free low calorie cooking spray (eg Fry Light)!
· Save 1 Syn per tsp by sprinkling artificial sweetener on your cereal, rather than sugar. Sugar in tea/coffee also amounts to lots of Syns – five hot drinks a day with a spoon of sugar means 5 Syns a day! Swapping to sweetener would save a whopping 35 Syns a week!
· Enjoy diet cola, lemonade and sugar-free squash completely for Free – a can of ordinary cola is a huge 7 Syns!
· Ready-made sauces add lots of unexpected Syns, eg a 500g jar of Dolmio sauce is a whopping 12½ Syns! Using canned tomatoes/passata, garlic and herbs as a basis for dishes means a tasty sauce without the Syns!
If you’re enjoying a meaty meal, meat and poultry is only Free when you trim all visible fat from meat, remove the skin from chicken and drain off excess fat when cooking extra lean mince.
THOSE DREADED "HIDDEN" Syns!!!
‘Dashes’ of milk in tea and coffee really add up! Watch out for takeaway hot drinks too (a skimmed milk latte can add up to 8 Syns or more!) Some members have found a great method for staying within their Healthy Extra ‘a’ measurement - pouring their day’s milk allowance into a measuring jug or plastic bottle, and using this every time they use milk – that way milk in tea and coffee doesn’t add extra Syns!
· Be Honest with yourself - Do you always count those sneaky Syns?! Eg, licking the cake bowl or spoon, a bite of your partner’s Mars bar, eating the children’s leftovers (‘shame to throw it away!’). It’s amazing how these little titbits can add up to lots of unaccounted-for Syns.
· Using heaped instead of level spoonfuls can also add hidden Syns. Believe it or not, flour is 3 ½ per level tablespoon - a rounded tablespoon is double, a heaped tablespoon triple!
· Are you supermarket savvy? Is your yogurt/cottage cheese really fat free rather than ‘low-fat’? It makes all the difference in Syns! A low fat fruit yogurt is 1½ Syns per pot – which really adds up if you have one daily. Swapping low fat for fat free yogurt saves 10½ Syns a week!
· Did you know that fruit that’s pureed, made into smoothies or canned isn’t Free? This is because pureed/liquidised fruit is easy to consume and add lots of extra energy (calories) and it doesn’t even fill you up! It takes 8 oranges to make a small glass of orange juice. We count juiced and cooked fruit as Syns to protect your weight losses - a small glass (142ml) of orange juice for breakfast is 2½ Syns.
GUESSTIMATING!!
· An extra 28g of Bran flakes each morning can add an extra 3 Syns each day! Do you weigh your Healthy Extras?
· Check whether your cereal is actually a Healthy Extra – some favourites like Special K, and Rice Krispies don’t contain enough fibre to count as a Healthy Extra.
· Don’t be tempted to class granary or white bread as a Healthy Extra. Just one thin slice can be 4½ Syns – and if you slice your own, that can increase to a whopping 8-10 Syns! A Healthy Extra is 57g wholemeal bread.
· Like your tipple? Are your home measures really as mean as a pub measure? Or are they more like a double? (That’s 5 Syns instead of 2½!)
· How about Syns – how often do you check after you’ve eaten them – or mentally reduce that portion so that it conveniently adds up to 10!
Food Optimising really is the most flexible, generous and healthy eating plan and by enjoying lots of delicious Free and Superfree foods, you WILL lose weight! Enjoy your meals packed with Free Foods and choose Free and Superfree foods first and between meals and you won’t need to worry about measuring/underestimating Syns as you’ll be superbly satisfied!
And finally, just remember that success really is a journey - not a destination!!!

WHEN YOU NEED A HELPING HAND......
When you need a little help...
Surround yourself with a support network that’s going to help you like yourself more. Find friends who really want you to succeed and understand the difficulties you face. Talk to people who appreciate that every good decision, good meal, good day is cause for congratulation!
Learn to like yourself
Feeling good about ourselves is a vital ingredient of permanent success. The ‘feel-good factor’, that fashionable phrase, has started to mean something someone else does for us, or someone else gives to us. But I don’t mean this at all. ‘Feeling good’ is not dependent on someone else. You don’t need someone to ‘give’ it to you. You can choose to have it.
Accepting that we can choose how we feel is a concept most of us find quite foreign. We tend to say things like ‘he made me feel bad’ or ‘you make me happy’ and as well as saying it, we believe it and live our lives accordingly. We become an emotional thermometer, allowing our feelings to be turned up or down by someone else. But we can actually be a thermostat not a thermometer. We can regulate how we feel, not go up and down according to how someone else feels.
I once read a memorable story about two commuters. Each day on their way to work they walked past a newspaper seller on the street corner. Each morning, one of the commuters always had a cheery word of greeting for the news-seller and every time the news-seller gave a grumpy response. One day, his companion asked why he continued to be pleasant to such a miserable fellow and why, after having his greeting thrown back in his face, did he continue his journey so cheerfully. ‘Oh, that’s quite simple,’ replied the man. ‘I like to choose my own mood, not let someone else choose it for me.’
Being a thermostat!
We really can and do choose how we feel. Others can only invite us to feel a certain way. The glorious revelation is that we don’t have to accept the invitation! Understand this and you’ll feel and be more in control of your own destiny.
Next time you’re feeling down, or blaming yourself for not losing weight, tell yourself that no-one finds losing weight easy and that it’s understandable that you sometimes stumble and fall. Tell yourself no-one is perfect. And your imperfections go along with the other stuff that make up this wonderful, perfectly imperfect person.
Feel good about yourself and give yourself the best chance of success – at whatever it is you decide to achieve.
Don’t be bullied – do it for you!
You have to decide whether your weight matters to you enough to make the necessary changes. Do not be pushed into doing this by someone else. Beware the bullies in friendly disguise! Choose what’s right for you and do it for the right reasons. Check your expectations. Realistically, the things that will happen are a change in your looks, your health and your confidence and those good feelings about yourself will be deeply reinforced. Personally, I think it’s the most marvellous feeling in the world.
If you’ve been burdened with a weight problem, then I promise that nothing tastes as good as being slim feels!

WOMAN OF THE YEAR PARTY NIGHT
Definitely THE place to be next week and I'm sooooo excited!!! A reminder that next week (Wednesday 18th August) we will be celebrating our Woman of the Year in style!!!! Both sessions will run at the normal times, and in each session you will have a chance to vote for who you want to be your group's Woman of the Year. Who inspires you the most, or who motivates you? Who do you believe warrants this prestigious title? If you haven't already done so, make sure you nominate someone either in group this Week (nomination slips will be on the interest table next to the beautiful heart-shaped box) or simply drop me an email. I'll be contacting everyone you nominate to encourage them to take part. We'll have a Food Optimising buffet that evening so make sure you all bring in a plate of food - I'll bring cups, plates, cuttlery and drinks. I'm hoping we'll have a bit of music as well, if my computer skills develop accordingly!!!! So be there to celebrate your Woman of Year - woo-hoo!!!

Pack up that Perfect Picnic!!!
Thanks for all your great ideas in both groups last night - here's some of the ideas I've put together, plus some other bits which I hope will inspire you when you're picnic-bound! Don't forget my top tip for scooping out the centre of the bread to leave you with more crust and more room for fillings!!!
For a perfect picnic sandwich try these tasty Free fillings:
•Grilled sweet pepper with 42g mozzarella (Healthy Extra ‘a’ choice) served on a bed of salad greens and basil (Free on Extra Easy, Green and Original)
•Crisp lean bacon, thick slices of firm fresh tomato and plenty of watercress for a deliciously peppery BLT (Free on Extras Easy and Original, count bacon as Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice (85g) or 6 Syns on Green)
•Pickled beetroot, sliced salad onions, halved cherry tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce and shredded carrot make up a super salad sarnie that's completely Free on both choices. For extra oomph, include sliced boiled eggs!
For more scrumptious sandwich suggestions, feast your eyes on our feature.
Pack up your hamper with these goodies, and get out into the great outdoors…
•Cold skinless roast chicken - Free on Extra Easy and Original
•Fresh pineapple cubes wrapped in lean ham slices - Free on Extra Easy and Original
•Sliced ham, turkey, chicken, beef - Free on Extra Easy and Original
•Chilled kebabs - skewer cherry tomatoes, rolled up ham/turkey, cubes of cucumber, inches of celery, squares of pepper and basil leaves to make a delicious lunch box treat that's Free on Extra Easy and Original
•Low-Syn Scotch eggs – shape sausage meat from Marks & Spencer Count On Us pork sausages (½ Syn each ) around a hard-boiled egg, making sure that the egg is covered. Crush a Scan Bran with a rolling pin. Roll the covered egg in the crumbs until evenly coated. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180ºC for about 25 minutes. Use the Scan Bran as a Healthy Extra ‘b’ choice or count 1 Syn per crispbread used.
Grab your picnic blanket, along with these tasty ideas…
•Potato salad - made with boiled salad or new potatoes and fat free fromage frais. Flavour with garlic or fresh herbs for a fresh and Free salad on Extra Easy and Green.
•Pasta/rice/couscous salad - made with 100% Free Food. Try mixed beans, sweetcorn, celery, raw mushroom, pepper, cherry tomatoes, radish, spring onion, and flavour with Syn-free vinaigrette, fat free natural yogurt or fromage frais for a Free extravaganza on Extra Easy and Green.
•Broccoli quiche - made with a roasted red pepper base, lots of eggs, fat free natural cottage cheese, broccoli florets and seasoning. Cook at about 160ºC until golden brown. Free on Extras Easy, Green and Original.
Picnic puddings:
You can't beat a punnet of strawberries. Did you know that many people eat strawberries with vinegar or black pepper? Apparently, it enhances their flavour (and it's Free) - try it!
Fruit kebab - skewer lychees, kiwi, pineapple, physalis, kumquats and grapes for a fruit salad on a stick - Free on both choices.
Keep it simple, and take a whole melon. Nibbling on a huge slice will be wonderfully refreshing before or after your sandwich!
Syn-free snacks:
Instead of sweets, why not take broad beans or peas still in their pods (both Free on Extra Easy and Green) or unshelled boiled eggs (Free on Extra Easy, Green and Original). Shelling them will take more time than opening a sweet wrapper, and the centre is Free!
Take a selection of raw vegetables cut into sticks to nibble on. You could make a variety of Free dips out of fat free natural yogurt, fromage frais or cottage cheese, flavoured with finely chopped garlic, paprika, chopped fresh pineapple or your favourite herbs.
Hints & tips
Invest in a cool bag and freezer packs to keep your picnic fresh
•Take along a football or badminton racquets for a Body Magic boost between courses!
•Avoid melted, sticky chocolate by packing chocolate flavour Snack-a-Jacks and topping them with slices of banana when you get there.
•Get into the spirit of British picnics and take your brolly!
Most of all, relax, have fun and have a bit of body magic to boot!!!
Enjoy this weight-loss journey - you really are worth it!!!!

SKIP THE DIET – FILL UP TO LOSE WEIGHT
For 40 years Slimming World has been encouraging members to fill up and eat more to lose weight. Now, at last, nutritionists and obesity experts outside the nation’s leading weight loss organisation are acknowledging that satiety is the key to successful weight loss.
It stands to reason that foods which fill you up fast, while also being low in calories, are a slimmer’s best friend and scientists at Slimming World recently researched a database of 40,000 foods to identify the top 10 most satisfying foods for slimmers – and the 10 worst enemies.
Obesity researcher at Slimming World, Dr Stubbs, says: ‘It may seem strange, but eating is actually the best way to lose weight. Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan* has always encouraged slimmers to fill up on these highly satiating foods, because we know that hunger and guilt often lead people to abandon diets. Eating to satisfy your appetite is the key to successful long term weight loss and knowing which foods help (or hinder) most makes it so much easier.’
Slimming World’s 10 most satiating foods
1. Lean meat - protein is the most satiating macronutrient (more so than carbohydrate, fats or alcohol). Lean meat is primarily protein while much of the muscle tissue is water.
2. Mushy peas - good old mushy peas are high on the satiety index because they are low in fat, low in energy density, and high in carbohydrate, protein and fibre.
3. Potatoes with skins - potatoes are full of starches which are digested and absorbed more slowly than simple sugars. When boiled they also absorb a lot of water, making them more filling and leaving the skins on means that the fibre content is higher too.
4. Noodle soup made with ramen noodles and tofu or Quorn (not instant noodles) - contains all the ingredients to activate the satiety cascade. Generally a bowl of ramen noodles contains a lot of water, green vegetables and a source of protein (tofu or Quorn) as well as the starch-rich noodles. High fibre (wholewheat) noodles are best for satiety.
5. Tuna chunks in spring water or fresh tuna - tuna tinned in water or brine is virtually fat free. It is very high in protein, low in carbohydrate and low in energy density.
6. Mexican style three bean salad -- indeed all beans including good old baked beans -- are high in protein, low in fat and sugar, high in fibre and high in moisture content. They take time to chew and digest and will fill you up for hours.
7. Boiled wild rice - wild rice is higher in fibre than white rice and when boiled is low in fat and high in moisture.
8. Versatile eggs, boiled, poached, scrambled or dry fried are an excellent source of protein and contain no carbohydrates.
9. Natural low fat yoghurt and skimmed milk soft cheeses are low in fat and high in moisture content and are a good source of protein. For a maximum effect on satiety and slimming effectiveness it is best to eat yoghurts with soluble fibres such as inulin and guar gum added to them and avoid those with added sugar.
10. Fresh fruit and vegetables – fruit and veg is high in water content, low in saturated fat and a good source of fibre while containing some protein. From apricots to bananas and tomatoes to watermelon, filling up on unlimited amounts make fruit and veg the slimmer’s best friend.
The 10 least filling foods
1. Crisps - these contain about 532 kcal per 100g, 57% of which is in the form of fat. They are also high in salt and low in moisture. They are one of the most energy dense commercial snack foods available.
2. Speciality coffees – especially those containing cream. A large Caffe Mocha with whipped cream contains 490 kcal and 16g of saturated fat. Because whole foods take longer to digest and fill you up more, liquid calories are the ones that fill you up the least.
3. Takeaway pizza with cheese or meat topping. These pizzas contain between 600 and 700 kcal each. They are low in moisture, low in fibre, low in lean meat, and high in fat, calories and energy density.
4. Takeaway thin fries contain about 330 kcal per 100g and a king size serving will give you about 640 kcal. They are high in fat, salt, energy and readily absorbed starches. Almost all of the moisture has been replaced by fat during the frying process. This is the least healthy way to eat potatoes.
5. Deep fried confectionary bars each contain over 420 kcal. Clearly dousing a chocolate bar in batter and frying it in oil is going to produce a food that is a mixture of fats and sugars, with no fibre, little moisture, virtually no protein and a huge amount of energy. Once chewed a deep fried candy bar becomes a semi liquid glob of fat and sugar that rapidly passes through the stomach and has little impact on satiety.
6. Doughnuts - packed with artery-clogging saturated fat and trans-fatty acids. An average doughnut also has 200 to 300 calories and few other nutrients. Those with cream or toppings on have even more calories.
7. Luxury full-fat ice cream - some luxury ice cream ice cream contains around 200-220 kcal per 100g and is about 60% fat. And because ice cream is a very viscous liquid, there is little chewing or digestion required to activate any satiety signals. This food tastes great and so we eat more of it and once eaten there is little in terms of satiety to put the brakes on.
8. Colas and other sugary soft drinks. The average cola contains around 40-42 kcal per 100g, which may not seem like much until you consider that a litre of coke will give you 400-420 kcal. This is almost entirely in the form of dissolved sugars, which have a minimal impact on satiety.
9. Smoothies range in calorie density from around 42 to an amazing 300 kcal per 100g, depending on how much sugar and fat is put in them. Making a smoothie disrupts all of the satiety-promoting fibre contained in the fruit.
10. Croissants may be the traditional French breakfast food but they contain between 400 and 500 kcal/100g and 55-60% of this energy is in the form of fat, the rest being sugars and quickly digested starches. They have little moisture, no fibre and little protein.
The science bit
According to Dr James Stubbs, foods which induce fullness, or satiety, tend to be
• high in protein and complex carbohydrates (these are the two most satiating macronutrients)
• high in fibre (which takes longer to digest and adds bulk)
• high in volume and low in energy density (as these sit in the stomach longer and fill you up)
• high in moisture content.
The sense of fullness is prompted by several different processes when we eat, which Dr Stubbs calls ‘the satiety cascade’.
“When we eat any food a number of signals are activated in the ‘satiety cascade’,” he explains. “First, chewing produces enzymes in the saliva to digest the food in the mouth. Once food is swallowed hormones and peptides are released and stretch receptors in the stomach wall relay signals to the brain to indicate how full the stomach is. As food passes through the intestine more signals are triggered by hormones, peptides and absorbed nutrients. Finally, nutrients absorbed into the blood and stored in various parts of the body can also serve as signals to the brain.
“Different foods activate different parts of the satiety cascade and some foods activate more parts of the cascade than others. So how filling a food is and how it affects satiety will be determined by the impact it has on the satiety cascade. For example taking three apples and turning them into apple juice will decrease the impact on satiety. This is because it takes eight times longer to eat whole apples than when they are juiced. Furthermore, apple juice doesn’t sit in the stomach for very long and so does not fill you up. This is because the sugars in the fruit are all absorbed very quickly when the physical structure of the apples has been disrupted. Also much of the fibre that was in the apples tends not to end up in the juice.
“The moisture content is especially important. Foods that are less filling tend to be those that are dry, energy dense and are rich in fats and sugars e.g. many commercially available snack foods and confectionaries like crisps and biscuits,” concludes Dr Stubbs. –Ends –

TOP GROUP - TOP TARGET MEMBERS!!!
Congratulations to everyone for all your fabulous ideads and tips to ensure everyone comes back with a superb weight-loss next week. We were particularly thrilled to "crown" our Target Members of the Year - the gorgeous Deborah in the first session and the equally gorgeous Trudy in the second session. Both look absolutely stunning having shed around 4 stones between them!
Next week we'll be having a BBQ special so make sure you're there to pick up tons of tips to get you through the BBQ summer whilst enjoying your food and still losing weight. The total weight loss in group this week was a massive 100 pounds - WOO-HOO!!!
If anyone has any special requests on how to keep motivated throughout the summer, please let me know. We all know that weight issues won't wait just because it's the summer holidays so we all need to stay smart!!
I briefly mentioned the Slimming World "MILES FOR SMILES" campaign in aid of the NSPCC. I was thinking of having a mini fundraising evening on 7th July where everyone could bring and buy low-syn cakes/quiches (or anything!) and if everyone brought just a couple of extra pounds we could really make a difference. The lovely Myra suggested bringing in clothes which no longer fit us and swapping these around for a donation, which is a great idea (so long as I don't have to fill my car with old clothes at the end of group!!) I also thought we could do a bit of body magic and arrange a fundraising walk around Cambourne Lakes on Sunday 11th July - so long as we 40 miles between us we'll be mega superstars! We could bring family/pets and make it a real fun couple of hours. I'm up for it - is everyone else? Other ideas gratefully received!!!
